San Juan Island

We managed to load up and get away for one night this weekend. It was our first "official" camping trip as a family...(alone) We stayed at San Juan County Park on San Juan Island. It was fantastic. Great weather (unlike today) and we saw WHALES!!!! :)
This was taken from our campsite.

Carving a boat to sail into the sea...Kira, Ethan and Grant worked hard at it.

The launch..

It came back!

A large Gumboot Chiton!

This tree is so cool the way it is attached to the cliff.

Watching....waiting...

Finally!!! This is my 10th time to Lime Kiln and finally whales!! They were everywhere. We watched them for about an hour...then the occasional whale would continue to swim by during the night. Our campsite was the perfect place to just sit and watch the whales. I gave up trying to get any better photos than these that Grant took. I have lots of out of focus photos. It's surprisingly difficult to capture whales on film!

Kira and I hurried down to Lime Kiln from our camp as the whales passed by. They came in a little closer and hung around. There was one baby (I think this was J pod,a local resident pod) It was spy hopping and did some pretty cool leaps.

On the way home we stopped by to visit San Juan's own "Mona" the camel. She loves apples!

Time to head back to Orcas. It was a good family time for us. No computer...or phone. Nice!
